Your university years are some of the best of your life – and it’s our job at Leeds University Union to ensure you make the most of every opportunity! With over 280 amazing Clubs and Societies on offer, there’s bound to be something that grabs your attention. Whether trying out a new activity for the first time or rekindling an old hobby, joining a society is the best way to throw yourself into the university experience and start making some great new friends.
Freshers’ is always a highlight of the year, and one of the best times to be out and about on campus. With a variety of stalls and events happening each day, make sure you swing by, see what’s going on and ask as many questions as you like; you never know what might jump out at you!
I recommend you sign up to your Departmental Society. They provide a great way to get to know the people on your course. They run regular socials, from coffee mornings to Otley Runs, as well as supporting career events and talks related specifically to your area of study.
If you’re having trouble deciding which club or society you’d like to join, check out our Give It A Go scheme. Nearly all our clubs and societies offer taster sessions throughout the year, as well as a number of wider sessions, trips and opportunities that we put on as a Union. These are a great way to try something new without committing to the group, and give you the friends and knowledge to be able to join the society after the event if you enjoy it!
And if we are missing a club or society that you think we really need to have? Set one up! The number of activities we offer continues to expand every year, so get in touch and we can tell you how to set up and run your very own group.
One last thing – make sure you get yourself out and about on Wednesday 2nd October for our annual Varsity sporting fiesta against Leeds Met. There are fixtures all over both campuses during the day, culminating in a huge rugby finale at Headingly Stadium in the evening. The sports clubs will be organising their own socials, or get together with your new hall or society friends to watch a spectacular day of sport! Then it will be on to the Union for celebrations and a special Varsity edition of our brand new Wednesday club night, SCORE.
