Hello from LingSoc!
Here at LingSoc our goal is to make sure you get the most from the department and from your time at Leeds.
Whether you're studying Single Honours or Joint with another subject, we work hard to make your lives easier, more enjoyable and just generally better both socially and academically.
It’s a tall order, but we’re pretty confident.
We Support You From The Start...
LingSoc works closely with the department to help you on your transition from a stressed-out, UCAS-obsessed A-Level student into the relaxed, easy-going, life-loving fresher that you’ve always wanted to be.
One way we do this is by partnering you with your own second-year buddy who will be there to give you all the information you need about settling in, going out, getting around or anything else you need to ask.
And we'd like to think we help out during the rest of your time at uni too.
...And Sustain You Throughout Your Time At Leeds.
Through collaboration with the department and other societies we run loads of talks throughout the year - ranging from research disscussion to careers, we hope there's something for everyone!
We also host revision drop-in sessions when things get a bit tough - contact the Academic Rep if you're looking for some help!
And if you're looking for course books at a bit of a bargin, graduating students often put theirs up on our Facebook group - give it a join!
Remember to also check out the Department website and Facebook page too for key course information and university-wide event details.
With so few contact hours, what better way to get to know your coursemates than on a night on the town! Or at least in a more casual setting than a lecture theatre...
We organise pub crawls and quizzes, coffee mornings and afternoon teas, and anything else that may tickle your fancy! We want to ensure you have great group of friends around you within the department.
We want to have biggest and best Linguistics socials ever this year, so please make sure you don’t miss out, and feel free to contact our Social Sec with any suggestions!
Our Facebook group and Twitter account are the key forums to connect with your coursemates.
Ask questions, receive society updates, get information about upcoming events and even get your hands on some used course books - we want to be accessible for anything!
We update very regularly and students use them daily, making our tight-knit community one of the most valuable things we offer as a society.

So we have told you what we like to do for you, now let's show who is going to get it done.
As you can see below, we all take our jobs incredibly seriously and put in a lot of linglove.
Please contact any of us with any queries you have, and we can't wait to meet you!
