What do we believe?

As a society, LUU ADP is part of the global abolition movement, but focuses on the USA as it is considered to be the 'world's leading democracy'. The legality of the death penalty is in total conflict with this idea; that it is legal in well over half the states is a severe and brutal violation of human rights and conventional morality.

Although we represent the 'anti' side of the death penalty issue we welcome all views on this controversial topic because debate is fundamental to making change and understanding all the counter arguments.

Our plans for this year

We want to educate and inform the Leeds student community about the moral and logistical problems within the capital punishment system in America. We hope to explore how the death penalty affects each and every individual all over the world, as well as its implications on us as a people and a society. We will do this through:

  • Talks from innocent death row exonerees, USA prosecutors working within the system and family members of murder victims who firecely opose the death penalty

  • Collaborating with other LUU human rights societies as well as organisations outside of the Union that strive to abolish the death penalty

  • Informal discussion and debate social events

Hello all, We are really excited to announce our latest event and AGM! Marc Hyden is a prominent campaigner against the death penalty, based in the United States he is currently the National Advocacy Coordinator for a project of Equal Justice USA. Marc has additionally served as the Legislative Liaison/Public Affairs Specialist for the State of Georgia and as the Legislative Aide to the Georgia Senate President Pro Tempore. We are really excited to have Marc speaking to us all the way from America about his experiences as well as alternative arguments against the death penalty. Alongside a really interesting insight into alternative and often controversial opposition to the death penalty, this would also serve as a useful insight for anyone who would like a future in campaigning, Marc will answer questions after his talk and is keen to give advice and insight into the work. Additionally this event will also serve as our AGM, if you would like to be on our committee next year and want to know more about running then contact It’s a really great way to add to your CV whilst doing something really interesting and rewarding. The event will be held at 5pm on the 20th March, in room SR B.08 in the Parkinson Building. It’s a real honour to get such a high profile campaigner to talk to us so it’d be great to see a good turnout. We look forward to seeing you all there!
