We are Leeds University Union Maths Society, and our job is to make sure you love your time as a student at Leeds. The society brings together students from all years that want to take an interest in maths, whether this is through your course or extracurricular activities. Anyone is free to join, whether attached to the school of Mathematics or not, and the main function of the society is to allow like minded people to meet up and have fun. Every mathematician needs to let off steam sometimes!
What Have We Got Planned?
The Maths Society always holds a number of socials throughout the year and this year we really want to step it up a level. Firstly we'll begin with the traditional geek-themed Otley Run, which is a pub crawl starting near Oxley Residences, winding its way through Headingley and ending at the Union for a night in one of its fantastic clubs! We run a wide variety of other events too, from pub quizzes to nights out to meals, as well as the two headline events for the year: the MathSoc Christmaths Ball and the infamous weekend trip away to a European city. We also want to know what you want to do, so if you have an idea for a great social message one of the committee members and we'll see what we can do!
We also have career related events throughout the year, including those hosted by our sponsor Teach First, and we will be able to keep you up to date with any maths related career events happening throughout the year. Whether you are a second year hoping to get onto that dream internship spot, a final year looking at options and opportunities, or a fresher beginning to think about careers after graduation, we will be able to provide opportunities and give you help in making those all-important decisions.
The Maths society has a number of exciting sporting opportunities for those who wish to play competitively, or for those who just want to give something a try. We have both an 11-a-side and 5-a-side football team and a netball team, so for regular players or those looking to try something new don't hesitate to come along to a training session. Both teams are involved in departmental leagues, however everyone is welcome to come along and try something new for fun! If you are interested in joining one of our sports teams please contact our male and female sports secs.
Whilst our football and netball teams are well established, we are always open to creating new sports teams in the maths society, so if there is anything you want to try and start within MathSoc, don't hesitate to contact one of the committee members! All sports are welcome provided there are enough participants.
