Clubs and Societies

With over 300 activities to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice. Get involved in anything from football to chess, wine tasting to skydiving, dance to ‘a cappella’. Even try your hand at Quidditch!

Although English is a fantastic subject to study at Leeds, the course’s limited contact hours can make it difficult to meet other students. The English Society is here to provide you with fantastic ways of meeting other English students, and to help expand your University experience- both academically and socially.

We offer our members regular socials, career events, UK and international trips as well as running active and successful netball and football teams. We have something for EVERYONE.

"Getting involved with the English Society has been the most valuable part of my time at univeristy. The English Society provides fantastic opportunities to meet new people, get involved with the local community, play sports and truly experience the University of Leeds student life. The committee are so friendly and will be happy to answer any of your questions!"- Jordon Mann (President 2013/14)

We offer a huge range of diverse socials for our members, from pub quizzes to nights out at some of Leeds’ best clubs, we offer something for everyone.

Every year we provide our members with unforgettable nights out at Leeds. Last year we frequented Donuts at the infamous Faversham for incredible nights out, including a cross-society social. Other signature socials included our regular quizzes and our legendary Scrabble Otley run.

This December we will be bringing you our incredibly popular Christmas Ball that is held at the Queen’s hotel. Last year we had over 270 attendees, including some of our best loved academics who also managed to loose their inhibitions on the dance floor.

We also offer English tea once a week, where we transform our foyer into a free tea and coffee shop for you all to relax and take a break.

Last year we indulged our members in a wide range of Arts and Culture activities in Leeds at a reduced price. A highlight was seeing Opera North’s Othello at Opera North with discounted entry and a private talk with the musical director before the show. This year we are planning even more activities for our members.

English Society has had an incredibly sporting year with an 11-a-side football team and two netball teams. The teams are open to all levels of ability, and our sports secretaries offer taster sessions in various sports that the universitiy offers. This year we are introducing monthly socials at the union, inter-university fixtures and a sports tour!

If you are interested, or have any questions, get in contact with our Sports Secretaries:                                                   and Chloe-

We aim to enhance your experience doing English, working with staff to bring you special interest talks and discussion groups. We also arrange regular theatre trips to a number of great theatres in Leeds to see plays, operas and comedy shows.

The English Society regularly organises trips for our members away from the city of Leeds itself. We offer day trips to some of the most important literary heritage sites in the country – The Bronte’s house in Haworth and the Viking Festival in York.

The English Society try and participate in as much charity work as possible. Last year our events included a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Trust, and a sell out Weakest Link: Students Vs Academics quiz night, in which students and staff competed against each other to win the title of the strongest link, in aid of The Reading Matters charity.
