Welcome to the LUU Ballet Society
Who are we?
The Leeds University Union Ballet Society has been established for over forty years and is still going strong today. We have around 130 students who attend classes to keep fit, improve their technique, perform and make new friends. We are open to anyone with a keen interest in ballet, and we cater for all levels of experience: from complete beginners to advanced dancers. All classes are held on campus within purpose-built studios with sprung floors, mirrors and barres. All of our classes are taught by professional teachers who provide support, coaching and advice as well as challenging yet fun material.
Is ballet for me?
Ballet is the basis of all dances today and we have a class and level of difficulty to suit all abilities, so if you are keen and interested then you will love our society. Ballet is one of the most beautiful and elegant dances and is renowned for its ability to improve strength, fitness, flexibility, posture and tone. For men, strength and power are pushed even further through lifts, jumps and pas de deux work in class.
Which class is right?
There are no auditions for our technique or pointe classes, you simply have to choose which class you think you will be most suited to. If you have any doubts about your exact level then please feel free to e-mail the society for more detailed information or advice.
We will be holding open classes for our competition class in order to select the most suitable members for the team. (dates to be confirmed later).
Classes for 2017-18 are as follows:
- Beginners Technique (No experience up to Grade 2)
- Improvers Technique (Grades 3-4)
- Intermediate Technique Higher (Grades 5-6 seeking a more challenging class)
- Intermediate Technique Lower (Grades 5-6 of a less confident level)
- Advanced Technique (Grades 7+)

Please note, Improvers Pointe members must have some experience in ballet prior to joining this class. If you have never done pointe work before, please speak to a committee member before buying membership for this class. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask.
Performances and competitions
After the successful Annual Dance Shows held at the University in March 2016 and February 2017, we are looking to build upon this success and show everybody the talent within the LUU Ballet Society. For 2017/18 there will be show classes to showcase our members' talent, and all the hard work students and teachers put in throughout the year, this will be the Intermediate/Advanced Show class, Intermediate/Advanced Pointe class and our Advanced Performance Team (Comp Team). Our Advanced Perfomance Team will also have the exciting opportunity to enter LUU and national dance competitions.
For 2016/17 we had several successful socials, including a trip to see Northern Ballet perform Casanova. Many ballet members also attended the annual LUU Dance Ball, which was great fun! We will be hosting a welcome social and introductory meeting in the first week of freshers for you to get to know your class mates and details of how the society is run. Details will be posted on the LUU Ballet Society facebook page closer to the date. We also intend to hold regular socials this year including:
- Club nights
- Theatre visits
- Otley Runs
- Christmas Meal
