LUU Comedy Society is a society for people who are interested in performing and watching sketch, stand-up and improvised comedy. Membership to the Comedy Society gives you discounted entry to all of the 'Leeds Tealights’, 'Sketchup' and 'Leeds Improfessionals' events, as well as a variety of nights around the city. We also attend a range of gigs around the country, from meeting up with other university comedy societies to visiting local comedy festivals.

Come along to weekly meetings, and meet like-minded comedians and comedy fans, and get the chance to try out your comedic muscles, watch others get funny, or even just pitch an idea you want others to try out. You don't need to have prior experience either, just a desire to laugh.

If you don't fancy performing, you can still join the society, reaping the discounts and attending a range of shows at a great price. There are also opportunities for producing, directing and crewing productions. For more information, attend one of our meetings and say hi. Alternatively, drop us an email.

The society is split into four groups: two sketch groups, and an improv troupe, and stand-up comedians.

The first sketch group is 'The Leeds Tealights'. Now in their tenth year, the Tealights are recast each year and the group writes, performs and produces original sketch comedy shows each term, working towards performing a show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. As well as gigs in Leeds and Edinburgh, the Tealights travel around the country, performing gigs in London and alongside the Cambridge Footlights. You can find more information out about them here.

The second part of the society is our Writers' Room. Often felt that maybe you'd be a dab hand writing? Naturally. Not sure where to start, or want a hand developing those hilarious ideas? HELP IS AT HAND! The purpose of these weekly sessions is for anyone and everyone to come along with comedy ideas that could be a play or just one sentence, and as a group we whip them up into some sweet, sweet content. This content can be sketches, or it could be ideas for a standup set. Absolutely no pressure to perform anything - if you just wanna come along and brainstorm some nonsense, this is the place. If you want to perform, Sketchup are a non-audition sketch troupe who also offer gigs and support for budding stand-ups. They meet up on at the Writers' room where they write and rehearse sketches, and just generally have a laugh. (Tuesdays 6-8pm, LUU Room 1)

We also have our very own improv troupe, 'The Improfessionals'. Like Sketchup, they are non-auditioning. They put on shows every semester and have regular workshops where they develop their improv skills and flex their comedy muscles. If you feel you're less of a writer and more someone who is funny on the fly, then they are the group for you! (Thursdays 7-9pm, Maurice Keyworth 1.24)

We are a very friendly society and meet up regularly outside of meetings and rehearsals with regular socials.

Comedy Society are also very passionate about working alongside other societies too. We can provide stand-ups, sketch (etc.) for charity events, production fundraisers, open mics - you name it. Furthermore, we have very strong contacts with Leeds Student TV and Leeds Student Radio. Contact Moe (our secretary) if you have any questions, here:

Also, in addition to regular welfare hours in the union, where you can come for impartial advice and signposting to local mental health and drug and alcohol support services, you can contact our welfare officer, Leo. If you have any issues related to the society you want to discuss, or just want to chat, they're only a message away!
