The Comic Soc is a friendly and enthusiastic group united by an appreciation of comics, graphic novels and all kinds of nerdy stuff. This is your chance to meet and interact with both those new to comics and seasoned veterans, and take part in our numerous social activities and discover exciting new titles in our huge shared library. Plus, enjoy the added bonus of fantastic discounts from our good friends at the Travelling Man comic store. Drop us a line and say hi, or simply come along to one of our numerous pub socials, society meals or bowling events. Looking forward to seeing you there.

We welcome all those interested, whether you've been reading comic books for years or have never picked one up. Our members have ever-growing personal libraries of books that are frequently borrowed so you can try out some titles without having to pay!

Since we started in 2009 Comic Soc has gone from strength to strength. We've enjoyed film screenings of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kingsman and Chappie all in the past year and each month take part in a social drawing competition that we run alongside Travelling Man. The annual Thought Bubble convention is always a highlight, bringing a whole weekend of events and we'll keep you up to date with smaller fairs and sales going on around the town. We've also teamed up with the Sci Fi and Anime societies to bring a full on Geek Night. This year we hope to hold even more joint-society socials whilst keeping our bi-weekly meetups which range from pub socials to film viewings and gaming nights. In the coming year we can also look forward to Batman vs Superman, Suicide Squad, X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as Captain America: Civil War.  Culminating in our regular end of year blowout, a traditional Leeds Otley Run, where we all dress up like fools and act like them too. A theme will be chosen, and after that it's up to you how you want to approach it, but remember we're always happy to help put it together.

We also have a podcast produced and hosted by two of our members, Ben Herring and George Pooley, with occasional appearances from other society members. We often talk about specific topics and delve deeper into the strange and amazing world of comics of all kinds, talking about certain characters, publishers, events, and inevitably how dissapointing Man of Steel was. Not only that but we also do commentarties on a number of different shows and movies, including the Batman animated series, Young Justice, and more. New episodes will be posted on our Facebook page, but you can also find them over on our Tumblr or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.

How much it is to join?

A small £2 donation to the treasury.

What that fee gets you

Membership fees go towards funding group activities and procuring resources. Ours is not a cost-intensive society, so we aim to get the most widespread return for our investments. Also a 10% discount at Travelling Man comic store in the city centre.  It also allows you access to our extensive library that can act as a great jumping off point for many characters that you may not have read before.

Regular social / meeting information

We regularly meet for light-hearted discussion and socialising at various pubs and bars in the centre, especailly The George, which is a short walk from Uni, where there's a quiz on every Wednesday, as well as a more geeky quiz every Sunday.  We also regularly host film screenings in the Travelling man lounge featuring comic book films and classic cartoons as well as video game tournaments focused around comic book inspired games.  Events are held weekly and are posted on our Facebook page beforehand so why not join us, drop by and introduce yourself?
