Engineers Without Borders Leeds (EWB Leeds) is one of the 30 student branches of Engineers Without Borders UK. Engineers Without Borders UK is an international development organization which focuses on 'removing barriers to development through engineering and providing opportunities for young people to learn about technology's role in tackling poverty'. Student branches throughout the UK work on a variety of international development projects and outreach programmes in water, energy, sanitation, industry, ICT, health, and infrastructure. Project work can be based domestically or abroad. Having been established in 2012, Engineers Without Borders Leeds is the newest student branch of EWB UK. EWB Leeds is comprised of undergraduates of all years and postgraduate student members. EWB Leeds has members from across the engineering faculties,as well as students from other disciplines outside of engineering.

What we do:

  • Visited the Centre for Alternative Technologies looking at renewable energies and how to live off-grid with a fantastic talk on the use of solar panels for refridgerating vaccines in Africa ( we hope to go back again this year)
  • Children from local schools visited the university for a day, where engineering and technologies used in low income countries were introduced to them.
  • Held a stall at the University Engineering fair engaging the community with hands on activities
  • Guest speakers talking about their experiences of working in developing countries
  • Promoting international placement opportunities to members and coming up with innovative engineering ideas that can be implemented into our summer international placement.
