We are the Leeds University Union Horse Riding Club, offering weekly lessons for all levels from complete beginner to advanced, fantastic socials and the chance to compete for the University in one of our BUCS league teams.  Like us on facebook, or follow us on twitter @luuhrc1.

Join up in Freshers Week for only £25!  Usually membership for the year is £30, or £20 if you join for just one semester.  This price covers free boot and hat hire, subsidised lessons and access to our incredible socials.  Our lessons are competitively priced from £14 - £19 for a group lesson (up to 5 people) for up to an hour. For experienced riders we take part in BUCS comeptitions throughout the year where horses are provided by the host riding school- a perfect opportunity for those who have always wanted to compete but have never had their own horse.

All lessons and training are held at Acrecliffe Equestrian Centre ( - approx 30mins drive from Leeds city centre and easily accessible by train or bus. Riders are grouped according to ability and when possible we try to include a driver in this group to aid transport. Where a car is not available, public transport instructions are provided in your lesson confirmation.

Once you have joined, you will be added to our fabulous Lesson Organiser's mailing list.  Two weeks in advance of every lesson they will send out a sign up email detailing days and times available every week.  If you want a lesson, simply reply to this email stating your name, ability, whether or not you drive and what day/time you prefer to be allocated a lesson space, and they will do the rest!  Once you receive a confirmation email then you can pay for your lesson by going online to the Leeds University Union website, find our page, click 'shop' and then select either select 'Beginners Lesson' or 'All other Levels lesson'. Please note, lesson times are assigned on a first come first served basis so check your email regularly to ensure you get the time you prefer.  Any questions? Email

The levels and times of our lessons are described below (please note these times may change):

Beginner: Riders who have never ridden before or have barely ridden.

  • Wednesday at 3pm
  • Thursday at 1pm
  • Friday at 10am

Novice: Riders who can walk and trot by themselves confidently and are starting to canter.

  • Wednesday at 11am

Intermediate: Riders who can walk, trot, canter competently and are learning to jump.

  • Thursday at 10am

Advanced: Riders who can walk, trot, canter and jump competently.

  • Tuesday at 6pm

We have three teams entered into the BUCS League; an advanced (A), an intermediate (B) and a novice (C) team.  Each team of four competes in their own league against three other university teams in dressage and showjumping at four competitions throughout term 1 and 2.  The overall winner of this league goes on to compete against other teams regionally, then the winner of this goes onto compete nationally.  We are proud of our history of team successes, having qualified for nationals several times in the past. In 2013 our A team finished in the top 5 nationally, and our B team was in the top 3 for two years in a row.  The first round of 2017 team trials will take place in October, and we welcome all experienced riders to trial (the competitions require that you are able to canter competently and jump to approx. 80cm).  Join our mailing list to recieve emails and updates from the Team Organisers.  We will also be recruiting for our development squad; riders who can be trained for next year's teams, compete in friendly compeitions against other universities this year, and potentially act as reserves for the BUCS teams.

Every Sunday the volunteering branch of our society organises trips to a local yard to help with the Riding for the Disabled Association lessons.  This is a brilliant day out helping with children and ponies and looks great on the CV! If you are interested in helping out then join this part of the club for free at

We organise a number of socials throughout the year for all club members, from nights out with amazing drinks offers to days out  at places like Bramham Horse Trials.  All details of upcoming events are posted on facebook and twitter @luuhrc1, and on signing up you will be added to the mailing list so you can stay up to date with the latest socials.

Want to try the club out before you join? Why not come along to our GIAG session where you'll get a tour of the yard, see the teams ride and have a short riding lesson yourself. Our next session will be in semester 1 of 2017. Transport and lunch will be provided. You will be able to buy your ticket online or at the union helpdesk.
