DEBATING | WORLD ISSUES | UN CAREERS | GREAT FUN
If you're interested in any of the above, then Leeds Model United Nations might just be for you. We meet every week to debate current affairs. However instead of representing your own view, you represent a member of the United Nations. Debates take place under a framework of different UN bodies including the Human Rights Council and the Security Council.
Participants gain the opportunity to get familiar with cultures, ideas and policies from around the world and are able to put themselves in the shoes of real diplomats.
Our website is the best source of information, so please check it out at the link below to get the most up to date information on what we're up to!
I'm new to MUN
You don't need any experience in international relations or politics to take part, in fact anyone can participate so long as they have the ambition to learn something new, and to work with people and try to make a difference in the world.
Model United Nations 'alumni' often to go on to become great leaders in politics, law, business, education and even medicine. It equips you with a wide range of valuable skills, such as problem solving, conflict resolution, research, public speaking and gives an opportunity to meet life long friends!
What about the socials
Here at LeedsMUN we pride ourselves for being a close knit and friendly bunch, so there is usually a social after every session. Many of them happen at our resident pub the Library, but we also organise variety of gatherings to suit every taste - from curry and movie nights to bowling and BBQs - which are a fantastic way to get to know your fellow members. There are also two big traditional dinners: Christmas and Formal, that happen at the end of each semester and are always loads of fun!
At LeedsMUN we send people away to conferences all across the country as well as hosting our own each year. Conferences are a great way to put your skills into practice and have a great time debating and socialising with students from other universities. We've sent members to Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Saint Andrews, Cardiff, Cork, and beyond. We rarely come back empty handed as Leeds delegations often win awards. However, the higlight of the year is our very own LeedsMUN Conference taking place from 17th to 19th February 2017, this year with the topic New Reaissance. Check out the conference website to find out more.
