What is LSTV?

Click here to watch just a snapshot of everything we got up to last year

LSTV stands for Leeds Student Television. It is a television station run from within Leeds University Union that broadcasts a range of diverse programmes from News to Sport, Entertainment to Music, Drama and more, made by students, for students.

Over the last two years, LSTV has won over 15 National Student Television Awards, making it one of the best student television stations in the country.

Recent graduates have gone on to work at Sky, the BBC and IMG.

Any member of Leeds University Union can join LSTV and get involved with making content, meeting new people or just having some fun!

What does LSTV do?

Every Thursday we have a meeting where we share our ideas for programmes, then over the week after the meeting we go about making those programmes. Then, every other Wednesday we show those programmes in a live broadcast called LSTV Live, which broadcasts on Youtube. We also aim to post every single day weekday (and are one of the only student television stations in the country that have done this)

But that's not all, we also have other broadcasts, like covering the the 2017 General Election or the Riley Awards live and our yearly Leeds Ball Coverage.

As well as this, we have regular socials like bowling, karaoke and weekly cinema trips, which makes LSTV a fun, sociable society, and a great way to meet new people and have a good time!

What sort of programmes does LSTV make?

Whatever anyone wants to make! Alongside the bi-weekly live show we produce two other shows; The Essential which covers all the most important news in and around the union, and Sideline which brings you the latest sports coverage. Over the past year, we've filmed a Top-Gear style race across Leeds, interviews with Leading Politicians and up and coming bands, collobarations with socities like Polo and Quidditch, heart-stopping dramas, and so much more! If you have an idea that you want to see made, we'll help you make it!

We also film things like the Fresher's Ball, the Summer Ball and various club nights in and around the Union.

And every year we enter a selection of our best programmes into the National Student Television Awards (NaSTA), competing against many other student-run Univeristy TV stations from across the UK, so your programmes could even be award winning!

What can I get involved in?

Absolutely anything you want! The great thing about LSTV is that once you are a member, you have the same opportunities as anyone else. You could agree to be part of the crew to make a programme, such as be on camera, sound, direct, produce or edit. You could be part of making the live broadcasts work if you're a bit of a techie, or get involved in marketing the shows.

You don't even have to make any programmes, as LSTV is simply just a great place to hang out and have a good time.

Do I need any experience?

Whether you have lots of media experience or have never picked up a camera before, it doesn't matter. We have had past members from many different backgrounds and courses that simply had a great time having fun and making great telly. We can offer you the training needed to use any equipment, and we'll show you the ins and outs of how LSTV works. In fact, many people don't even know what they are doing. But that's just part of the fun. We don't look for quality, we will make anything that anyone wants to make.

We hold regular training sessions and seminars, and if you're not sure about anything, you only need to ask a member of our friendly committee.

What equipment do you use?

We have seven broadcast-ready Panasonic AG-AC90 cameras, GoPros and a whole selection of other Cameras and accessories.  We also encourage people to use HD DSLR cameras if they have them.

We have 4 HD capable edit bays loaded with Adobe CS6 software, and all the plugins from Red Giant and Video Copilot. Much of our live broadcasting equipment is industry-standard, with a highpowered Blackmagic ME/2 vision mixer.

We also have accessories like tripods, microphones, a boom pole, dolly, and lighting kits too - and we're constantly upgrading our equipment.

How do I join?

Any member of Leeds University Union can join LSTV and get involved with making content, meeting new people or just having some fun!

An LSTV membership costs just £10 and is valid for the academic year you bought it in. A membership gives you access to all our equipment, and rights to get involved with anything we do.

To join and gain a membership, simply log into the Leeds University Union website using your ISS login details you will be issued with when you join the University of Leeds, or create a guest account. Once logged in, come back to this page and click 'Join this group'. Then, check out your basket at the top of the page and pay with your card. The Union only lets us sign members up this way, so we cannot accept cash.

Once you have paid for your membership you can manage it from your Leeds University Union account, and you will start receiving emails from us keeping you up to date with everything LSTV!

So, have we convinced you yet?

Your time at Unversity is short, and getting involved in societies like LSTV is crucial to making the most out of your time at University. We promise to make your membership worth it! The activities you can get involved in with LSTV can also look great on your CV whether you want to pursue a career in TV or not, and you can make contacts with past and present LSTV members who are in the industry to try and get your foot in the door.
