University of Leeds Sports Club of the Year 2013!

We accommodate players of all abilities including students and non-students. We have 6 teams competing in the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Leagues and many more squad and social players with a total of 380 members.
Our beginner, improver, advanced and performance programs cater for all tennis abilities including those that are starting tennis for the first time.
The 2nd best performing sports club at Leeds University in 2012/2013 – a year that saw LUUTENNIS develop into one of the best clubs at the University and we have followed on from that and increased in numbers year on year.

Standard Membership:  £15 / year

Standard members at LUUTENNIS enjoy the following:

  • Access to rackets and balls which can be borrowed from the Gryphon Sports Centre for use at Hyde Park Tennis Courts and access to rackets and balls at Weetwood Tennis Courts for use at Weetwood courts..
  • Access to social tennis at Weetwood Tennis Courts:
    Friday (14:30 - 17:30), Saturday (09:00 -18:00) and Sunday (09:00 - 11:00)
  • Free British Tennis Membership (BTM) through LUUTENNIS – normally £25/year through the LTA.
  • Entry to Wimbledon Ticket Draw in March.
  • Social events every Wednesday.  See Semester 1 Calendar for important events and socials.
  • Entry to the social league for competitive players.
  • Reduced cardio tennis rate at the Edge and Gryphon Sports Centres.
  • Opportunity to buy University Tennis Kit in October.

How to join

  • Log in to the Union website - see top right of the page - (Students: use your ISS log in details, Non-students: log in as a guest)
  • Click 'Join this Group' at the top of the page
  • Add the standard membership to your basket and checkout. Go to SHOP and add the program you want to join to your basket and checkout.
  • BEGINNERS AND IMPROVERS: Go to 'Events' and sign-up to the beginner or improver timeslot you want to attend (Only one session per member). Every player is guaranteed one session per week. You may attend other sessions based on capacity - please contact the program coach for more information. If you want to change your session to a different day/time then send an email to

Beginner Program    £20 for Semester 1 & 2 (for standard members)

Location: Hyde Park Tennis Courts (Woodhouse Moor)

* If you're just starting tennis then we advise you to join the 12:30pm Fri or 12pm Sat session. If you can't make those times then you can attend the 13:30 session.

Open to all standard members including:

  • those that want to start a new sport
  • beginners that seek to improve

The program involves:

  • Weekly coached session; rackets and balls provided for those without.
  • Timetable for Semester 1 as follows:
    • Weeks 1-2         Introduction
    • Weeks 3-4         Forehand
    • Weeks 5-6         Backhand
    • Weeks 7-8         Serve/Volley
    • Weeks 9-10       Match Practice
  • Semester 2 timetable will be drawn up by program coordinators at the end of Semester 1 and will be tailored to individual needs.

Advanced Program     £30 for Semester 1 & 2 (for standard members)

Location: Weetwood Tennis Courts (Weetwood Playing Fields)

Open to advanced players who want to play regular tennis, improve their skills and/or play competitively. Also serves as a stepping stone for squad performance selection and BUCS matches.  Places on this program are limited and by invitation only. Contact Amy Warwick - - for more information.

  • Weekly training session on Sunday that includes:
    • Drills
    • Match Practice
    • Player & Video Analysis
  • Matchplay sessions every Friday afternoon from 14:30 till late (floodlit courts)
  • Fitness sessions

  • Opportunities for selection for performance training

Development Tennis Squad

£70 / year for standard members (John Charles Centre for Sport)

Indoor training on Sunday afternoon. Includes transport to and from John Charles Centre for Sport (Departure/drop off point: Parkinson Steps).

Performance Tennis Squad

LUUTENNIS has 6 teams competing in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Leagues. Our players represent the University in the BUCS Leagues and Championships (inclduding BUCS individual singles and doubles competitions). See last year's results here. There are 3 indoor training programs for our performance players; a newly established training program at David Lloyd Leeds, an integrated training program with Leeds Beckett University and a training program at John Charles Centre for Sport. BUCS matches are played at JCCS, David Lloyds, Batley Tennis Centre and Weetwood Playing Fields.

£80 / year for standard members (David Lloyd Leeds)

Indoor training program for Men's 1st and 2nd teams. 3 sessions a week including fitness and drills.

Indoor training program with a Master Performance Coach for Women's 1st and 2nd teams and Men's 3rd and 4th teams. includes Strength and Conditioning program, free sports massage, and subsidised physiotherapy.

Selection for performance team players occurs at team trials** and is also a rolling process over the year for those that miss trials and those in the Development and Advanced Program.

Medics and Dentists Tennis Beginner/Advanced/Squad Programs 

We’re Leeds Medics and Dentists Tennis Society (LMDTS) - the best medics tennis society in the country!

We are a friendly, welcoming bunch committed to giving everyone the opportunity to play tennis come rain or shine. We cater for all abilities from those who have never picked up a racket to regular, top quality, competition players.

We run both indoor and outdoor sessions, and serve up some ace coaching to prepare us for matches against other medical schools and teams at the University of Leeds. We’re a large society with lots of members, so don’t worry – there’s always someone of a similar ability to play with.

Standard membership to the club is £15 and gets you all the benefits LUUTENNIS members enjoy, see Standard Membership Then our membership prices vary according to ability:

Beginners/Intermediates - £20 – Saturdays 10am – Midday [Hyde Park Tennis Courts]

Advanced (invite only) - £30 – Tuesday 8pm – 10pm [indoors]

Squad (invite only) - £40 – Wednesday 8pm – 10pm [indoors]

Off the courts, our socials are a racket. Not only do they help you to get to know the rest of the society but also allow you take a break from work and have a class time. Events are welcome to all and include formal dinners, our summer BBQ and tours!

Sports Pass

Please note: In order to access Weetwood from Week 3 of term you will need a sports pass. All students living in University Halls have a sports pass included in their accommodation fees. All members of the Edge have a sports pass included in their membership. To purchase a sports pass please visit:


1. Do I need to be a standard member to join the beginner, improver or advanced program?

Yes, LUUTENNIS programs are only open to standard members of the club.

2. Do I need to be a standard member to join the Medics and Dentists program?

No, the standard membership is not necessary to join the Medics and Dentists program

3. How do I know what my playing standard/level is and whether I fit in the beginners or improvers program?

Make sure you attend the open days where the coaches will be around to advise what program to join. If you can't make the open days then drop in to anyone of the sessios for free and the coaches will advise you on which program to join.

4. Can I move to the improvers program from the beginners program if I feel I'm improving and would gain more out of the improvers program?

Yes, speak to one of the coaches and email

5. If I don't make the it into the performance squad, what is there for me?

Our development squad is hosted at John Charles Centre for Sport and is continually assessed throughout the year to allow players to move into the performance squad, depending on their level. Places are capped at 20 and are limited to those who miss out on the performance squad during the final stages of team trials. 

6. Do I need a sports pass to access the beginner sessions?

No, the beginner sessions take place at Hyde Park courts. You will need a sports pass to access the social tennis sessions at Weetwood however.

7. Do I need a sports pass to access the improver or advanced program?

No, you do not need a sports pass to attend the sessions at Weetwood
