Leeds University OperaSoc is an exciting performance society dedicated to putting on two high quality Opera productions each year.

OperaSoc perform two shows each year, with impressive casts of over thirty performers and a full orchestra. Our informal auditions take the format of a relaxed group workshop at the start of the rehearsal process, but we encourage those of all abilities to come and give it a go as we pride ourselves on being a fun and welcoming society (come and see for yourself!).  With frequent visits to see shows, such as Opera North productions, and lots of socials to enjoy, there is plenty to get involved with.

The society boasts many successes such as:

  • Won Best Show at the Riley Awards 2018 with Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
  • Nominated for Best Show with Mozart's Don Giovanni and and won Best In Category (Performance) at the Riley Awards 2017.
  • Nominated for 4 awards by The Scribe in 2017, including Best Lighting, Best Set Design, Best Costume Design and Best Producer for our production of Mozart's Don Giovanni
  • Nominated for 8 awards at the Wharfedale Festival of Theatre 2016 for our production of The Magic Flute, including Best Show, Best Director, and Best Musical Director. At the awards ceremony, we picked up 4 awards, including Best Programme Design, Best Supporting Actress for Jasmine Munns as the Queen of the Night, an award for Comedy Excellence and Audience Interaction for Peter Law as Papageno, and an award for Innovative Re-Interpretation of a Comic Opera.
  • Nominated for 2 Riley Awards 2015 for Best Show with Bizet's Carmen and Best Collaboration alongside Backstage Society.
  • Performed at Leeds Lock-In at The Holy Trinity.
  • Our 2010 performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance received a 5 star review in the Leeds Student newspaper.
  • Best Show at the Rileys with Mozart's The Magic Flute in 2009.
  • Best New Society at the Rileys in 2007
