Smart running

Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that exercises both mind and body.

Run. Jog. Walk.

Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that exercises both mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on a map; as a competitive sport the challenge is to complete the course in the quickest time choosing your own best route; as a recreational activity it does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run or walk making progress at your own pace on the courses planned to suit you.

City, forest or moor, not to mention the rain, snow, wind and sunshine, orienteering can prove to be a challenge for your mind and muscles...

Successes & History of LUUOC

LUUOC (Leeds University Union Orienteering and Fell Running Club) is now entering its sixth year. With recent successes including our club tour to Sweden, good results at BUCS 2016, the Edinburgh Big Weekend, and the organisation of 2014 BUCS in Leeds (awarding LUUOC with Best Event at the Riley Smith Awards),

We run weekly training in and around Leeds on Wednesday evenings. This is a mixture of navigation and fitness training and we also organise regular group offroad runs. Our sessions cater for everyone from those still getting to grips with the sport to elite athletes (or so we like to think).

The union's Get Out Get Active scheme also organises a 5 week beginner training programme on Wednesday afternoons (starting this October). If you are new to the sport this an ideal way to get started.

No need to purchase loads of kit. LUUOC has a supply of compasses, SI cards, head torches, control description holders whistles that we loan out (for free) to members. Comfortable running shoes with good grip are a must. Leggings are useful to protect your legs from stings and scratches. And some sense of direction is helpful too!
The club has purchased an electronic SI timing kit with support from the Footsteps Fund and runs its own events throughout the year.
