The Club

Club Moto: Marching on Together “proficiscor in una”.

As a club we have 4 teams who play in the BUCS league every week and have over 150 players registered. Last year, our 1st XV narrowley missed out on promotion in to the formidable BUCS Super League, now challenging for the North A Title. The 2nd XV maintained their position in their league, finishing second, and the 3rd and 4th XV have continued to improve and develop players. Over the years the club has established player development relationships with Leeds Carnegie, Doncaster Knights, Otley, Ilkley, Yorkshire and England. These links make it possible for players to combine a first class education with a route to professional rugby.

University rugby at Leeds offers a fun but highly professional environment to continue your rugby at whatever level suits you. We have team training twice per week, individual/unit sessions once per week and strength and conditioning sessions twice a week.

Our coaching staff have a wealth of experience and the links in professional rugby to convert your potential in to a professional rugby career. Head Performance Coach, Mark Luffman draws upon his own playing experiences representing Yorkshire Carnegie. 'Luffers' dedicates long coaching hours to the club to maintain the high standards all members strive for.

Every year, all four teams compete against Leeds Beckett University in the infamous varsity fixtures. The 1st XV have the honour of rounding off the day of sport by playing at Headingley stadium in front of a crowd of over 15,000 people. The game is the sporting highlight of the year for the whole university and a historic 20-3 win in the 2016 Varsity match ensures that this will continue to be true.

The Leeds University Rugby Club’s mission is to offer students the opportunity to play rugby at the level which they aspire to. To ensure they are properly coached and managed so that they can do so in a safe environment. Their self-respect and taking part to be as important as being successful.

University of Leeds rugby caters for players of all abilities, so you will always be able to find a team to accommodate your skill level. Throughout the whole club, everyone is treated as a team mate, so should you feel you need improvement in a certain area of your game, there will always be someone happy to help you develop yourself, whether it be in the gym or outside on the rugby pitch.

The Leeds University Rugby Scholarships are designed to support the needs of performance athletes during their time studying at the University of Leeds. This aim will be achieved by providing technical and financial support. Providing practical solutions and services to students who have the talent and commitment will ultimately enable them to fulfil their potential within their chosen sport and their academic ventures.
