'Best Volunteering Society' Riley Award Winners 2014
Teddy Bear Hospital is a fun project, run by students, working with children between 4 and 8 years old. We aim to promote healthy living and alleviate concerns about hospitals and doctors through fun activities and play.
We run health education workshops at primary schools, beavers and brownies groups across West Yorkshire. The workshops last for approximately an hour and consist of around six volunteer-led teaching stations that children rotate around. These cover a variety of health-related topics in fun and interactive ways.
One of our most popular stations is surgery, where the children dress up in scrubs and pretend to be surgeons as we open up our big teddy bear and have a look at the organs inside! Other stations include healthy eating, X-ray, lung function, dentistry and anatomy. Have a look at the station map in the useful documents section below for all the details.
We welcome students from all courses and all year groups who have a passion and interest in teaching children and making a real difference in the local community. You don't need any background knowledge either - we have training videos and instruction cards about each station and we'll help you out when you're on the visits.
Why should you join?
It's a brilliant opportunity to practice communicating with young children and to develop your teaching and leadership skills - it would look great on any CV. It's also lots of fun, very rewarding and helps to make a real difference in the local community. In 2013-14, we took our workshops to more than 800 children!
How much time would it take up?
Each visit takes 2-3 hours and you can come on them as often or as little as you like. There are no meetings or training sessions to attend either; just come on visits whenever you want.
How much does it cost?
Teddy Bear Hospital is completely free to join. We also pay expenses for anyone who can help drive equipment and volunteers to the groups we visit.
How do you sign-up?
