VOTED BY BUCS: NATIONAL CLUB OF THE YEAR 2013/14!
The Key Club Facts:
- We are the second largest hockey club and the largest university hockey club in the COUNTRY!
- Last year we had over 250+ members from different years, degrees and backgrounds.
- We have 8 teams playing in both the national BUCS league on a Wednesday and the local Yorkshire Leagues at the weekends. There is also the opportunity to compete in 'Rush' hockey against other University societies.
- We cater for all skills, whether you are team GB or a complete beginner. As long as you're happy to pick up a stick (or try to!), you'll fit right in!
- LUUWHC prides itself on our high quality coaching and training, welcoming nature and overall team results.
These socials, dear reader, are legendary.
The hushed, sacred words that are 'Wednesday Nights' are the buzz words which speak a thousand words to all university students, whether you be in a sports club or not.
Wednesday night socials will see your average hockey girl developing fancy dress skills that would put Stella McCartney or a BBC costume drama to shame. (You'll become amazed how many functions a cardboard box can have.)
We also have team socials within each squad that can vary from local curry nights to lazerquest. Further to this, there are Saturday socials, general university events to go to and occasions to support the men's hockey team who we work closely with throughout the year. We've built a positive social and professional relationship with LUUMHC which means that you can easily get to know the gents on socials, at community and fundraising occasions or simply on side of the pitch.
So dearest Freshers, come and meet our old girls with their wise university knowledge, get involved and meet crowds of other like minded freshers.
(All of this sounding good so far? Well, we haven't even mentioned the wonderous dates that are Varsity, the Christmas Meal, the Hockey Ball, or Alumni Weekend.... Just you wait!)
The past 4 years have been a phenomenal year for LUUWHC. Raising around £40,000 for Sudep Action, Cancer Research, SARSVL and Movember, we have exceeded expectations. We have achieved BUCS Club of the Year not just because of our sporting abilities, but because of the fantastic work that every member of our club has done for our community.
With Hannah Garty leading the way, members of our club help coach hockey in local schools, swim the equivalent of the channel, climb the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, cycle Coast to Coast, run the Half Marathon and the Colour Run, take part in a Christmas Street Collection and enjoy Race Nights, Pub Quiz nights and auction nights… phew! Every hockey girl’s social calendar has been full to the brim.
For this 2017-18 season, our fundraising calendar will most certainly not disappoint. We will continue to battle to the peaks, be champions in the pool, and on the track. Whilst topping last years amazing efforts will be difficult, we are aiming for bigger and better things this year!
Through hockey you will not only learn valuable stick and handling skills, but you will also significantly improve your fancy dress capability, community spirit and pint time.
Throw into that beautiful mix the fantastic friends that you will inevitably meet, gain and laugh with all along the way and, well, you will fall in love with Leeds University more so than you thought possible.
Drop us an email during term time, or contact us through the website/twitter with any questions, we're pretty flexible!
See you all soon,
Love the LUUWHC Committee xx
