Idea Title:

Should LUU encourage the University to work together in delivering coordinated messages regarding the private rented sector?

What the Idea is about:

The two organisations should pool resources and coordinate efforts to inform students how best to navigate the private rented sector, as a duty of care from both.

Why have you proposed it?

Every year, students move into shared housing, flats, and other private rented accommodation. When going through this process uninformed, it is easy to fall foul of landlords and letting agents in the sector who continually take advantage of the naivety and lack of knowledge some students have, and capitalise unnecessarily on this. LUU runs awareness campaigns and has comprehensive advice on how to rent and what to look out for. The University should take better care of its students once they move out of University-owned accommodation such as halls, as part of their duty of care to their students. To this end, the two institutions should collaborate and coordinate campaigns so that students are better informed and empowered to house hunt and rent successfully.
