What the Idea is about:

Whether the collective student body should publicly support a bid, which is as yet undecided/unconfirmed, for the European Capital of Culture.

Why have you proposed it?

The European Capital of Culture is a year-long festival held by a European city. It has to be won against fierce competition, much like the Commonwealth games, Olympics or Tour de France Grand Depart.

The next opportunity for a UK city to be European Capital of Culture will be in 2023! It seems a long way off but bidding closes in mid 2017 and cities have to register to bid by the end of 2016. Cities thinking of bidding for 2023 are starting their preparations now as it takes at least a year to put a bid together. That means we need to make up our minds soon if we want to bid!???

Even if Leeds didn’t win, the energy that goes into developing the bid can help foster urban regeneration, change the city's image and raise its profile on an international scale. Due to this it could generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits for Leeds.
