What the idea is about:
Proposal for The Gryphon newspaper Editor candidates to be elected in the same process as LUU executive candidates
Why have you proposed it?:
Since the beginning of the leadership race, the Leeds University student newspaper editor has been elected in the same process as the LUU Executive.
Holding the position as the only student society written into the union’s constitution: ‘there shall be a student newspaper’, The Gryphon newspaper carries a lot of responsibility on campus.
The Editor-In-Chief is responsible for what the student body reads, and how it is read.
It only seems natural that the person in question should be able to be held to account by its campus.
Last year, the Editor-In-Chief’s position, for the first time, did not receive the same coverage as the LUU executive candidates.
The candidates were left out of all promotional material and were placed on a separate ballot when the elections were held.
The candidates campaigned for the same amount of time as the LUU executive, and were elected at the same time. The 2013 Editor won their campaign with 3,562 votes. The 2014 Editor won with 892.
The Gryphon were not given a chance to vote on this decision, nor was the student body.
I believe that it is only fair that the student newspaper Editor is given the same amount of coverage as the LUU executive during the Lead LUU campaign.
I propose that we should vote for the student editor to be given the same amount of coverage as the other Lead LUU candidates, and a follow-through online ballot to be reinstated during the next leadership race.
