February 2014 Your monthly update on what your Community team have been up to!
National Voter Registration Day - On Wednesday 5th February we took part in the first ever national voter registration day, along with hundreds of educational institutions across the UK and in partnership with NUS Connect and Bite the Ballot. The aim of this was to get 250,000 young people registered to vote, and to buck the trend of young people not voting! If you haven’t registered yet there are registration forms available at helpdesk, and online. For more information go to www.bitetheballot.co.uk/nvrd
Councillor and MP Question Time– On Wednesday 12th February we held a councillor question time as part of our work towards Better Leeds. Neil Walshaw, Lucinda Yeadon and Jonathon Bentley came for a councillor question time and Hillary Benn came in for an MP question time on Friday 14th. This gave students the opportunity to hold their representatives to account, remember you can always get in touch with Frankie F.O’Byrne@leeds.ac.uk if you’ve got an issue you want to raise or fix where you live. Keep your eyes open for more MP question times in the near future!!
Coppicing - Georgie (Halls volunteering co-ordinator) went with 13 LUU students in conjunction with local charities Hyde Park Source and Leeds Coppice Workers on Saturday 15th February to help improve local Leeds woodland. Through the ancient technique of woodland management, Coppicing, students helped to improve biodiversity in the woods and increase the level of local timber which consequently boosts the number of local jobs. A great day was had by all and the rain stayed away!! If you want to get in contact with Georgie about upcoming events please email email@example.com
HiT Find a Flatmate - HIT Society and Leeds University Union have been collaborating to help students meet prospective housemates for next year!
